Learn how to meditate properly

When one learns how to meditate properly, happiness, focus, and clarity follow. High achievers like Oprah, Jack Canfield, Ellen, Deepak Chopra, Wayne Dyer and so many others all meditate. The science on meditation is conclusive. Meditation is a powerful tool that leads one to higher consciousness, awareness, understanding and happiness. While many articles talk about the benefits of meditation, few explain how to meditate properly. In this article I’m going to give you two ways how to meditate, and how to do it right.

Learn how to meditate properly

I first learned how to meditate by buying a couple DVD’s. They were designed for beginners and explained the many benefits and a few ways to meditate. I follow what I learned on these DVD’s any time I feel stressed or need clarity in my thinking. Soon afterwards I watched the Deepak Chopra DVD about happiness and in it he stresses the importance of meditation. It’s hard to listen to a Wayne Dyer CD and not hear him emphasize the importance of meditation for happiness and spiritual awareness.

How to Meditate Properly

All meditations pretty much start in the same way:

  1. You can meditate anywhere, but when you are beginning, find a quiet place where the lights can be dimmed or turned off.
  2. You can meditate in quiet or have some atmospheric or instrumental music playing softly in the background. Don’t play music with vocals.
  3. Sit upright in a chair or on the floor. If you sit on the floor, sit on a pillow or cushion. Don’t slouch. Don’t lay down. Maintain good posture.
  4. Close your eyes and pay attention to your breathing.
  5. Take a deep breath, breathing in through your nose, hold the air for a few seconds, and let it out through your mouth.
  6. Repeat breathing this way for a few good deep breaths.
  7. Do not think of anything.

From this point forward the various styles of meditation each have their own way to proceed. Here’s one that I do often:

  1. When the 7 steps above are complete, breath only through your nose paying attention to the air coming in and going out of your nose.
  2. When thoughts come into your mind, and they will, refocus your mind on the air coming in and going out of your nose.
  3. Do this for about 20 minutes.
  4. At this point still keep focus on the air you are breathing. Do not actively think of anything. Now, when a thought comes to you, be aware of it, but maintain focus on your breathing.
  5. As thoughts come to you, do not dwell on them, but be aware of them. These thoughts are important for guidance, awareness and happiness.
  6. Continue for at least another 10 minutes. Meditate as long as your time allows.

Doing this daily is a relaxing process that also provides you with special insight.

Brendan Burchard is a popular public speaker, teacher and mentor. He offers his 20 minute meditation that he likes to use twice daily. It is very similar to the above meditation, but when you learn how to meditate using his method, you’ll find it easy to do and very rewarding. I highly encourage you to watch this 30 minute video as he demonstrates his favorite meditation. Brendan Burchard Release Meditation

Learn to Meditate

While it is not hard to meditate, it is also not hard to not meditate. In our busy world full of activities and electronic devices, we find it difficult to unplug and find time for ourselves. In years past when there were not as many distractions, TV, music or iPhones, people relaxed on the porch in the evenings and often started conversations with their neighbors. Today we cocoon inside watching TV, playing video games, texting or talking on the phone. We rarely allow ourselves any quiet time.

When you learn how to meditate, you’ll discover an inner quiet, a peace and happiness that the noise of life does not provide. Meditation is a way to get answers to your most important questions.
